The place of Avola Antica, distant from the city of Avola about 10 km, is located on the Aquilone Hill and includes the ruins of the ancient city of Avola destroyed by the earthquake of January 11, 1693.
This medieval city has Sicilian origins and on the top of the hill there are the remains of cave dwellings and necropolis.
This plateau ibleo, including the vast hilly area of the current Avola Antica, was intensely inhabited since the Middle Bronze Age (XV century BC), when Sicily was already long inhabited by Sicans.
This is confirmed by the archaeological finds that came to light sometimes occasionally or as a result of exploratory excavations conducted, however, without systematic continuity, over a century or so.
The main attraction of this area, is the oriented natural reserve Cavagrande del Cassibile a protected natural area located in the municipalities of Avola, Noto and Siracusa, in the province of Siracusa.
The reserve, established in 1990 and managed by the Azienda Foreste Demaniali of the Sicilian Region, was created with the aim of preserving the various riches of its territory both from a naturalistic-landscape point of view and from an archaeological and anthropological point of view, since the whole area has been inhabited over the millennia and considerable evidence of this has remained in tombs and finds.
The reserve covers 2,700 hectares and is characterized by the course of the river Cassibile, the ancient greek Kakyparis, which gives it its name and that has created over the millennia digging deep gorges or canyons at different depths that touch the maximum of 507 m in the area of Avola Antica; the place with the maximum width of these gorges is also located in the same area of Avola Antica and measures an extension of 1200 meters wide.
In the bottom of the valley has formed a system of small waterfalls and lakes, a source of summer refreshment for its many visitors, which is accessed by an ancient and evocative scale known as the Scala Cruci.
