Sortino is a valuable baroque town in the province of Syracuse, known for the production of honey, is located in the Hyblean Mountains near the Rock Necropolis of Pantalica and the Anapo River.
Sortino is defined “the city of honey” for its excellent production but is also famous in the province for being the home of pizzolo and for the high consumption of beer for person.
The necropolis of Pantalica is one of the best known historical testimonies of the city, composed of five thousand caves that were excavated by several generations of hominids, perhaps by the first Neanderthal men, certainly by the first Sapiens Sapiens of the Paleolithic and Neolithic.
The work was, finally, completed in protohistoric times by the people of the Pantalica Civilization who re-used them as tombs.
The “Opira di li Pupi” (in Sicilian language), in which the heroic deeds of the French paladins are narrated, has been part of Sortinese culture for many years. Among the most represented stories we have the “Orlando furioso”; other representations staged are the famous “farse”, comic scenes narrated especially in Sicilian. Surely the most important “pupari” Sortinesi remain the “Puglisi”, who for several generations have handed down this art.
